GST Calculator

Add GST to a base amount or extract GST from a total, at any slab, with CGST and SGST split.

How GST Calculator works

GST, the Goods and Services Tax, is the indirect tax added to most goods and services in India, and it comes in slabs so the rate depends on what is being sold. Two everyday questions arise, adding GST to a base price to reach the amount to charge, and pulling the GST back out of a total that already includes it. This calculator does both directions at any slab and splits the tax into its CGST and SGST halves.

You enter an amount and choose the GST rate, then tell the tool whether that amount is the base price you want to add tax to or a gross total you want to break down. For adding, it shows the tax and the final inclusive price, and for extracting, it shows the base value hidden inside the total and the GST portion. Alongside the total tax, it splits it evenly into CGST and SGST, which is how tax is shown on a normal within-state invoice.

The method is straightforward arithmetic. To add GST it multiplies the base by the rate and appends it, and to extract GST from an inclusive total it works backward using the rate so the base and tax add up to what you entered, rather than naively taking a percentage of the gross. As a quick example, extracting 18 percent from an inclusive total does not mean removing 18 percent of that total, because the tax was calculated on the smaller base, and the tool handles that correctly. The CGST and SGST split is simply the total tax divided into two equal parts.

Use this whenever you are pricing something with tax or reading a bill and want the tax component clearly. It is not a filing tool, so if you need to compute your net GST liability across purchases and sales for a return, that is a separate accounting task this calculator does not attempt.

It fits several real needs. A small shop can set a shelf price that already includes GST. A freelancer can add the correct GST on an invoice. A buyer can check that the tax on a receipt matches the slab, and see the CGST and SGST breakup for their records.

Everything is computed in your browser, so the amounts you type are never uploaded or stored. There is no account and no fee, and the only real limit is your device's own memory, which simple tax arithmetic will never trouble. For interstate supplies the tax appears as a single IGST rather than a CGST and SGST split, so apply the figure to the right situation and confirm the correct slab for your product.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between adding and extracting GST?

Adding GST starts from a base price and puts the tax on top to give the final amount to charge, while extracting works from a total that already includes tax to reveal the base and the GST inside it. The tool does both, so you pick the direction that matches your situation.

Why is extracting GST not just taking the percentage off the total?

Because the tax was originally calculated on the smaller base price, not the gross, so removing a flat percentage of the total would overstate the tax. The calculator reverses the maths correctly so the base and GST add back exactly to your inclusive total.

What are CGST and SGST, and why are they split?

For a sale within the same state the GST is shared equally between the central and state governments as CGST and SGST, which is why an invoice shows two half-rate lines. The split here is simply the total tax divided in two.

What about interstate sales?

When goods or services move between states the tax is charged as a single IGST at the full rate instead of a CGST and SGST split. The total tax amount is the same, so you can use the figure and just relabel it as IGST for interstate invoices.

Which GST rate should I choose?

The correct slab depends on the specific good or service, and the tool lets you pick any rate rather than guessing one for you. Confirm the applicable slab for your item from the official GST rate schedule, since rates differ widely by category.

Can I use this to file my GST return?

No, this calculates the tax on a single amount, whereas a return involves netting the GST on your sales against the credit on your purchases across a period. Use accounting software or a professional for filing, and this tool for quick per-item figures.
