The quality setting is where the real decision lives. WebP can compress in a lossy way, much like JPG, or losslessly for graphics with flat colors. WebP is the better web citizen, but JPG is still the safer traveler.

Each of those is really the same problem, which is fitting good-looking photos into fewer bytes.

All current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge display WebP without any plugin. The rare exception is very old software, so if you need to support something ancient, keep a JPG copy as a fallback.

Much of the embedded camera and location data is not carried into the WebP output. That is often welcome when sharing publicly, but keep the original JPG if you rely on those EXIF details.
