Tip Calculator

Calculate the tip and split the total between any number of people, with a per-person amount.

How Tip Calculator works

Splitting a restaurant bill and adding a fair tip at the end of a meal is exactly when nobody wants to do mental arithmetic. This Tip Calculator takes the bill total, the tip percentage you want to leave, and the number of people sharing, and gives you the tip amount, the grand total, and the clean per-person figure, so the table settles up in seconds without anyone squinting at the receipt.

You enter the bill amount, choose or type a tip percentage, and set how many people are splitting the cost. The tool shows the tip in money, the combined total, and what each person owes, all updating live as you change any field. If the group size or the tip rate shifts, for example when one person only had a drink, you can adjust and the split recalculates at once.

The math is straightforward but easy to fumble after a long dinner. The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percent divided by a hundred, the total is the bill plus that tip, and the per-person amount is the total divided by the number of people. As an example, a bill of 80 with a 15 percent tip adds 12, making 92, and split between four that is 23 each. The calculator assumes an even split unless you are working out shares yourself.

Use this over rough rounding when the tip rate is specific or the group is larger than a couple of people, because a quick guess tends to either shortchange the server or overpay, and dividing an odd total in your head across five people is genuinely annoying. Having the exact per-head figure keeps things fair and fast.

People use it to split a group dinner evenly, to check the tip a payment terminal suggests before tapping, to tip on services like a haircut or a taxi, and to budget a rough total before ordering. It works for any currency, since it just handles the numbers you give it.

It all runs in your browser. The amounts you enter are never uploaded, there is no sign-up, and nothing is stored after you close the tab, so the only limit is your device. Pull it up whenever a bill needs splitting.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tip get calculated on the amount before or after tax?

By default it applies the tip percentage to the bill total you enter, so if you type the pre-tax subtotal the tip is on that, and if you type the taxed total the tip includes tax. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is common in some places, so enter whichever base you prefer.

Can I split the bill unevenly between people?

The tool divides the total evenly across the number of people you set, which suits most group meals. For an uneven split you would calculate each person's share of the bill separately, then apply the tip percentage to each share.

What tip percentage should I leave?

Customs vary widely by country and by service, so there is no single right number. The tool lets you enter any percentage, so use the norm for where you are rather than a fixed default.

How does it handle rounding for the per-person amount?

It shows a precise per-person figure, and many groups round each share up slightly so the total is easy to hand over. Rounding up a little also quietly bumps the tip, which servers generally appreciate.

Can I use it for currencies other than dollars?

Yes, it works purely with the numbers you enter, so it fits any currency. Just read the results in whatever currency your bill is in, since the tool does not convert between them.

Does a bigger group change the tip amount?

No, the total tip depends only on the bill and the tip percentage, not the headcount. More people simply means the same total is divided into smaller per-person shares.

Can I work out the tip percentage from an amount I already left?

This tool is built to go from a percentage to an amount, so to reverse it you would divide the tip you left by the bill and multiply by a hundred. That gives the effective percentage of a tip you already decided on.
